Mothering Sunday always falls on a Sunday halfway through Lent in the UK and in medieval times was a time when you were supposed to revisit your mother church (where you where baptised), this was called going "mothering". From the Reformation in the 16th century it became a legal right of servants to be given a day off to do this and since they did this with their family members it became associated with visiting their real mothers as well. The idea that the holiday should became one where we celebrate our mother as a person came from the US following the movement created by a woman called Anna Jarvis and Mothers Day as we now know it began to be celebrated in the UK from the 1920's onwards; by 1950's it was fully established as the non-church celebration we have today.
